It's just gone 2am and I'm here sitting in a London pub surrounded by UK-based Democrat supporters (ex-pats and friends) - and excitement is just beginning to reach fever pitch.

News has just broken that Obama is projected to take Ohio - a key swing state - which should see him cruising his way to the White House. The BBC currently has Obama on 175 electoral votes to McCain's 76. It looks like McCain could have had his chips very soon.

Somebody jokes that Fox News is calling the results early - in a bid to get the pain over and done with for Republicans. Ah, bless. There's a sadist element already emerging. "We want to see them squirm," shouts someone from the back.

The venue of tonight's Obama Watch event is the Hoop and Toy, in South Kensington, an area with a significant American population. I'm currently on the third floor (next to Big Issue founder John Bird) where the big screen is tuned to the Beeb - although David Dimbelby is testing our patience with his slightly doddery presentation style. Someone needs to get him a coffee!

Downstairs on the ground floor and in the basement the screens are beaming CNN - which seems to have the edge in terms of technology and speed of results. Although one piece of this technology involves having presenter Jessica Yellin being shown as a hologram in the studio, Princess Leia-style. Bizarre.

Despite the desire to see the night through the beer is flowing and the pub's staff are being kept on their toes.

It's free champagne all round, once the result is confirmed. Fingers crossed…
