Regulars at The Prince of Wales in Cheam, Surrey, are enjoying a new type of dining experience after the pub won a St George's Day Competition in The Publican.

Licensees Phillip Mackett and Julie Dawson won the Black Rock Grill cooking solution, worth over £5,000. In June the pub launched its Café Rock menu, featuring dishes which customers cook themselves on hot rocks.

Phillip said: "We were so surprised when we learned we had won - we've never won anything before.

"The point of sale material is really eye catching and the table talkers, banner and poster helped us launch the concept to our regulars.

It's vital to be one step ahead of the competition and no one else in the area is offering the Black Rock Grill, so it's a great point of difference for us. In today's climate, where people aren't spending as much money, it's a great way to get customers through the door."

The menu includes cajun chicken, salmon fillet, salmon and prawns, as well as a reef and beef dish of king prawns with rib eye and rump steak.

"The customers love the interactive nature of the concept and have commented on how remarkably tender and flavoursome the food is," said Phillip.
