Are pooches welcome in your pub?

If so, let the customers know because The Kennel Club has launched a competition to find the UK's most dog-friendly businesses.

It has urged customers of all food and drink businesses to nominate those places that they think are pulling out the stops for dogs, be it with innovative services (specially prepared menus, for example) or simply a bowl of clean water.

The most dog-friendly pubs are then entered into the club's online database, which dog walkers can peruse before picking a drinking spot.

Kennel Club spokeswoman Caroline Kisko said: "Our website allows dog owners to share their recommendations and search for dog-friendly venues before they set out for the day, which is particularly useful as more and more people are choosing to save their pennies and spend their summer at home.

"Of course there are still places that refuse to allow dogs inside and we want to change that mentality. This is particularly true of places that serve and sell food and believe it is illegal to allow dogs in - this is completely false and only applies to food preparation areas."

Dog lovers can nominate venues in five categories: Somewhere to Eat, Somewhere to Sleep, Somewhere to Drink, Somewhere to Visit, Self-catering holidays or in the 'other' category, which incorporates all other public places. There will also be an award for dog-friendly offices.

Winners will be announced in September when they will receive winners' certificates and a Champion Dog Bowl while all recommended venues will receive an Open for Dogs certificate and sticker.
