One of Liverpool's oldest pubs has re-opened following an asbestos scare, discovered during a refurbishment project.

Thomas Rigby's, in the city's business district, was shut down in April after the potentially deadly substance was discovered in its basement kitchen during preparations for a re-fit.

Workmen discovered the asbestos after removing a stud wall and three false ceilings.

However, once the danger had been dealt with, owners Okells Brewery decided on a more full re-furbishment, spending around £200,000.

The pub, which re-opened earlier this month, has been re-wired, re-plastered and given new carpets and a paint job. And pictures of the Isle of Man, where Okells Brewery is based, have been replaced by photographs of the local area, including the city's famous docks.

Licensee Fiona Watkin is delighted to be back behind her bar. "It's great to be home," she said. "The break has made us re-evaluate what we are doing and all our customers have reacted well to the changes.

"We get a lot of tourists in and they love to see pictures of the city.

"The pub is generally a bit brighter, but structurally it has not changed at all."

The pub's garden has also benefited from investment, with 25 tables now outside.

Despite the asbestos scare the pub continued to trade in the building next door, a former restaurant. The restaurant has also now been transformed into a new bar called the Lady of Mann.
