A quick thinking pub manager saved a customer's life by giving her emergency first aid after she had a heart attack.

The pensioner was eating at the Kiss Me Hardy pub in Colliers Wood, South London, when she collapsed earlier this month.

Ex-paratrooper Albert Mottershead was able to get the elderly woman out of her wheelchair and give her life-saving CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

He told thepublican.com: "She had turned blue, which obviously was not a good sign, and her heart had stopped. I gave her CPR and managed to get her breathing again before the ambulance arrived."

The woman, believed to have been in her 80s, was taken to hospital and has since been discharged.

Family members have paid a special return visit to the pub to thank Albert for his swift actions.

But for the 59 year-old, who has been in the pub trade for 25 years, it was all in a day's work.

"I used to be a paratrooper so I have dealt with worse situations than this in places such as Malaysia and Northern Ireland.

"If you panic the situation becomes much worse so it is important to stay in control.

"I am just glad that I managed to help her out. I hope that if I am ever in the same situation there will be someone there to do the same for me."

A spokeswoman for pub owner's Spirit Group said: "We commend Albert Mottershead of the Kiss Me Hardy for this life-saving act. He deserves much praise and recognition for his quick-thinking and courage.

"We are lucky to have such exceptional members of our team."
