Smoke-ban court case adjourned
Smoke-ban rebel Nick Hogan's court appearance for allegedly flouting the smoking ban has been adjourned until January. Hogan has now sold his two Bolton outlets the Swan and the Barristers, but is still running the Swan with Two Necks, in Chorley. Hogan said he is still considering whether to move to Spain but will not be selling the Swan with Two Necks.
70 establishments offer BII certificate
The BII (British Institute of Innkeepers) has revealed that 70 educational establishments are offering its Certificate in Alcohol Awareness qualification since it was launched in October. This was announced as the group slammed recent calls for an increase in alcohol tax. BII boss John McNamara said education, rather than taxation, was the key to sensible drinking.
FSB awards for small businesses
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has launched its search for Britain's small business champions. Entries are invited from thriving businesses that are well run and highly regarded by staff and customers. There will be six regional winners and an overall winner who will get £10,000. Minimum wage campaign launches
Workers in Norwich, Sheffield and Glasgow are being targeted in a minimum wage awareness campaign. Adverts will be broadcast on local radio in the regions to raise awareness of the minimum wage and tell listeners where to seek advice. In October, the adult rate increased from £5.35 to £5.52.
Sharp's seeks female tasters
Cornish brewer Sharp's is looking to recruit more women as beer tasters. It has just completed its first lesson for new beer tasters and wants more. Trainees must pass an exam, then help with regular taste and smell tests.
Jennings sponsors porky contest
Jennings is to host the World's Biggest Liar Competition today. The contest to find the best porky is being held at the Bridge Inn, Santon Bridge, Cumbria, in association with Copeland council. Jennings has launched the World's Biggest Liar beer (4.3% abv) to mark the event.
