JD Wetherspoon has picked up a prestigious Banger award, recognising its commitment to the sausage.

Presented by the British Pig Executive (BPEX) during British Sausage Week, the award recognises the managed pub group's contribution to raising the standard of sausages within the pub sector.

Wetherspoon sells 17m sausages a year across it 670 pubs, all made from assured British pork and carrying the BPEX Quality Standard Mark.

The sausages are supplied by the Welsh Sausage Company, which recently scooped the 'Best Pub Sausage' award for 2007, given by BPEX in association with The Publican. Five different sausages appear on the Wetherspoon menu, from breakfast to pub food classic sausage and mash.

J D Wetherspoon purchasing and distribution manager Mark English, said: "We are delighted to have won the Banger Award for services to the British sausage industry. It highlights our commitment to serving sausages of the highest quality to our customers at all times."

BPEX foodservice trade manager Tony Goodger said: "Part of the ethos behind British Sausage Week is about recognising and rewarding those operators who are proud of and committed to sourcing and serving quality sausages.

"Sausages remain a firm favourite with pub customers who, in our experience, like to see premium quality and regional varieties on menus."
