Gordon's offers DVDs and PoS kit

Diageo is giving away kits to help staff make the perfect gin and tonic. The pack includes a DVD showing chef Gordon Ramsay, who has been signed as the face of Diageo's Gordon's Gin, making the drink. It also includes drinks mats and other PoS material. For a free kit call 0845 603 7769.

Trio of JDW pubs due this month

JD Wetherspoon is set to open three new pubs in October. They are: the Cuthbert Brodrick in Leeds (22 October), the Dragon Inn at Birmingham (29 October) and the Water Poet in Gloucester (29 October). A further seven outlets are set to open before Christmas, with more planned throughout 2008.

Inventive hit with fly-posting fines

Bar operator Inventive Leisure has been fined

more than £3,000 for

fly-posting in Milton Keynes. Inventive was fined, along with promoter Paul Baines of Leighton Buzzard, for 10 offences under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. Posters on road signs and in bus shelters were advertising an event at Inventive's Revolution bar.

White Horse toasts Beer Hunter

The White Horse in Parsons Green, London, has paid homage to legendary beer writer Michael Jackson, who died last month. A day of events was laid on and a collective toast to the Beer Hunter came at 9pm on Sunday. Jackson was friends with former manager Mark Dorber and current licensees Sonia Harris and Dan Fox.

Special festival brew from Hydes

Hydes has produced a special Festival Ale as part of its role as the official brewer of the Manchester Food & Drink Festival 2007. It will be available through the 10 days of the festival, which starts on Friday (5 October). The ale, a medium-bodied brew, will be sold in the special Hydes bar in city-centre marquees.

Drinking to forget doesn't work

The notion that drinking helps people forget has been rubbished by scientists at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. They found that a person's memory was enhanced, even among those who had drunk more than the legal drink-driving limit. "Our work suggests heavy drinking actually reinforces negative memories," said Professor Matthew During.
