THE GUV'NOR
It's time for the trade to give itself a pat on the back for the high standards being maintained in pubs, says the BII vice-president
For once it is time to give ourselves a pat on the back. Over the last few weeks I have visited more than 60 pubs, judging for one of the large pub companies' internal awards, and to my delight the experience of these pubs has been very encouraging.
The overall standard of cleanliness in the pubs and its toilets has been very good, as has the varied selection of food on offer, with many of them using local produce and fresh ingredients - especially fish - all at sensible and affordable prices.
A few of the premises need to present their back bars better, and their menu design and outside advertising. This is where their business development managers and pubco should give help by using their expertise and appropriate point-of-sale material and signage.
I've also seen many varied forms of smoking shelters - many with music, heating and lighting - expressing to smoking customers that they are still an integral part of the pub business. I am sure that over time the capital outlay will be repaid. Hopefully by setting these standards it will encourage more customers back into our pubs.
I would ask you to spare a thought for the many licensees and their families who have been devastated by flooding and the downturn in trade during what should have been our summer.
Many of these victims have had to turn to the Licensed Trade Charity (LTC) for financial help. Your generous support for this charity through these difficult times would be appreciated, either by a donation or displaying one of the LTC's collecting vessels on your bar. To receive a vessel, telephone LTC on 01344 884440.
