40 Inspector Steve Greenacre & Sergeant Jan Brown
Greater Manchester Police (39)
Why they are on the list:
Manchester's best known coppers have once more championed the cause of night-time economy policing through their work with the Home Office and rapid expansion of the Best Bar None (BBN) scheme, which they initially pioneered in their home city five years ago.
What the past year has held:
Thanks to the duo's influence Best Bar None has now been rolled out into more than 80 UK towns and cities, providing a framework through which all stakeholders adopt new working practices to reduce the risk of alcohol-fuelled disorder and related crime. Pubs, bars and clubs in BBN areas now work towards higher retail standards in return for an annual award scheme to recognise their work in making venues safer places.
Challenges ahead:
More of the same. As government agencies increasingly target the licensed trade in the name of responsible retailing and a high-profile alcohol crime-reduction strategy, Greenacre and Brown will hope to introduce Best Bar None to more towns and cities.
