Why they are on the list:

Bish and Hayward remain two of the trade's key lobbyists and there's been no let up in their activity over the past year. Smoking has replaced licensing as perhaps the most crucial issue, but a host of other subjects - from glass bans to the minimum wage - have kept them busy. Hastings is invariably the first in to bat when it comes to commenting on trade issues.

What the past year has held:

The BBPA and ALMR registered concerns about the details of how the smoking ban will operate. The ALMR has continued to express concern about the rising minimum wage to the Low Pay Commission and the group indicated its wish to forge closer ties with the Bar Entertainment & Dance Association. The BBPA has opposed blanket glass bans by writing to MPs who signed Early Day Motions in favour of polycarbonates. Meanwhile, both the BBPA and ALMR have been involved in on-going discussions with Government about re-drafting the Licensing Act guidance.

Challenges ahead:

The Government's new alcohol strategy is set to present fresh challenges for the two trade associations. And there's likely to be plenty of lobbying around glass bans - not to mention smoking. Bish predicts ban campaigners may call for greater restrictions on where people can smoke. "It's the ratcheting-up of the ban that we need to be alert to," he said.
