A Leeds bar chain has given children from a local school a chance to show what they know about healthy eating.
Around 60 children from St Matthew's primary, in Chapel Allerton, were treated to a freshly-prepared meal courtesy of the nearby Suburban Style Bistro after the competition. Children from key stage one drew a healthy plate of food, while key stage two children wrote out a healthy menu.
The winners were Mia Harling and Daniel Stone, who took their classes along to the bar to celebrate.
Among the choices on the menu were home made beef stew, salmon fingers and char grilled chicken breast, followed by ice cream and chocolate brownies for pudding.
The competition helped launch a new initiative where children eat for free before 7pm, providing one adult eats from the two courses for £15 menu.
Andy Longman, managing director of owner Suburban Style Bars, said: "As a nation we've generally become too reliant on processed food, but fresh locally-sourced grub is not only far better for our health but also offers extremely good value for money.
"If we can get back to the time when meals were freshly prepared then perhaps we can also start eating together as a family. It's too easy to say we are too busy to spend time cooking or eating together, but in reality all we want to do is go and do other things such as watching television."
All the food in the bistro is fresh and locally-sourced where possible, and the children's menu is a smaller version of the main adult menu.
- By popular demand, the deadline for the Healthy Children¹s Menu Competition 2007 has been extended to June 14 to give busy pubs more time to enter.
