Foreign satellite pubs and suppliers have been warned not to expect a quiet summer, despite the end of the football season. Ray Hoskin, managing director of Media Protection Services, the company which prosecutes on behalf of the FA Premier League, said he expected raids on pubs and suppliers to continue throughout the coming months.
Phonographic Performances Limited (PPL) has announced a 12% increase in licensing revenue raised compared to last year. The total raised was £98m - £84m of which will be distributed back to record labels and musicians. The PPL licence allows pubs to play recorded music. The organisation has been criticised by the trade for its complex rating system and high fees.
Iranian property magnate Robert Tchenguiz has sold his spirits company Whyte & Mackay - famous for its blended Scotch whisky - for £595m to United Spirits, part of United Breweries. Along with chairman Vivian Innerman and other investors, Tchenguiz acquired the company for £200m in 2001 and took full control in 2005. United Spirits plans to introduce Whyte & Mackay's brands into India.
