How was trade over the Easter holiday?

We had a great weekend at both our pubs - here at the Sun and at the Duke of Edinburgh at Barrow. The Sun was particularly busy and Saturday proved to be a fantastic trading day, when we were mowed out. We could have sold our bedrooms 10 times over and often needed two receptionists on the phones to deal with people desperate to book accommodation. Trade was substantially up on last Easter, so our accountant is very happy - and so am I!

We were definitely up on last year, but roadworks involving the new village bypass did tend to take the gloss off things. Traffic was nose-to-tail most of the time as a one-way traffic control system was operating, so that might have kept visitor numbers down. The good weather certainly brought people out, as you would expect in an area like the Lake District. By next Easter, we hope to have a new bypass and a new tourist sign to help the business.

It was fantastic at the Brewery Tap and also at Charters, where we held a big beer festival to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the boat, which is our "floating pub".

We had 100 beers on a special site by the river and the crowds literally poured in to enjoy the weather. On Thursday night at the Brewery Tap we had a Caribbean night, complete with steel band, which was a huge success. All in all, business was well up on last year's figures.

It was unbelievable - definitely among the top three weekends we have had here since we took over five years ago. The weather really brought people out - and when the sun shines, punters seem to have a different attitude to spending their money! Various events happening in the village helped to swell the crowds and at times we were run off our feet. Business was leaps and bounds ahead of last Easter's figures.
