Anchor Inn, Combwich, Somerset
Agent: Bettesworths
The Nicklin family has taken over at the Anchor Inn in
Combwich, Somerset. David and Mandy Nicklin and their son Matthew moved from Worcestershire to take over the pub, which is situated near Bridgwater.
The Anchor is the last surviving pub in the tiny hamlet and Matthew - a qualified chef - will be responsible for the day-to- day running. "I am determined that the Anchor will become the hub of village life," he said.
The family has already started to make several changes, including redecorating the two bars and introducing food. They have also converted the skittle alley which will double as a restaurant on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and as a function room from Monday to Thursday, catering for local events such as birthday, anniversary and social parties.
"We are also planning to introduce a number of fun nights, including quizzes and live entertainment, and we hope to convert the open terrace into another restaurant to allow diners to enjoy the picturesque views," said David.
"We had been looking for a freehouse in a good location and fell in love with the Anchor because it nestles on the river Parrett," he added.
The inn itself dates back to the 15th century in parts and has an Art Deco-style front elevation designed to reflect its maritime name.
"Another possibility which the family may consider is converting the outbuildings to letting accommodation," said Barney Bettesworth of Bettesworths, which handled the sale. "This would provide bed and breakfast for the many visitors who come to explore this beautiful part of Somerset and its attractions of Glastonbury Tor, Cheddar Gorge and the Somerset Levels."
The pub was sold by Bettesworths off an asking price of £440,000 for the freehold interest.
