Red Lion
Withington, Manchester
Licensees do not come much more experienced than pub managers Kevin and Janat Connor. The couple recently celebrated
30 years in the licensed trade and 21 years running the same pub, the Red Lion at
Withington.
In their time at the Wolverhampton & Dudley-owned pub, Kevin and Janat have been instrumental in making the Red Lion a local institution.
Welcoming all-comers
Kevin remarks: "I would say we are a household name in this part of Manchester simply because we have always tried to cater for every kind of pubgoer. We try to be all things to all people, invest in our staff and maintain a quality service to our customers.
"In return, we have secured a very loyal set of regular customers and we are winning new ones all the time."
Targeting all ages
Business increased substantially over last year (12% on wet and 4.5% on food sales) as a result of the couple striving continually to put on new attractions and entice extra customers through the door. Kevin observes: "We try to target every age group to ensure we are reaching every potential customer."
In summer, the pub's bowling green and outside front patio are highly popular areas while inside there could be a quiz, comedy night, TV soccer or a charity event taking place. In spite of the range of entertainment available, space is always made available for customers who simply want a quiet drink.
Doubling trading space
The Connors were the first managers of the Red Lion when then-owner Marstons converted it from a tenancy in 1986. Over the 21 years, eight refurbishments and capital schemes have taken place, doubling the floor area of the Grade II-listed, 300-year-old building in the process.
One of the most popular additions has been a conservatory and patio area, which has helped develop food sales in what is
predominantly a wet-led business.
