You certainly couldn't accuse this bar of going down the pan.

Suburban Style Bar, in Chapel Allerton, Leeds, has taken the top prize in this year's Loo of the Year Awards.

The toilets won the "pubs and wine bar" category during a ceremony at the National Cycle Museum, near Birmingham.

The bar, which opened in early 2005, is housed in a former Serbian club. The basement toilets are, in effect, a single room with a partition down the middle, with ladies on the left and gents on the right. However, both sexes share the same hand wash basins and driers. The toilets even have coin operated GHD hair straighteners.

Andy Longman, Suburban Style Bar Co managing director said: "This is a fantastic way to cap what has been an incredible year for us. The Chapel Allerton bar is approaching its second birthday, and this gives us a real cause for celebration. This is the first time we've entered these awards, so we hope that coming away with the top prize will help raise the standards of loos in the hospitality industry."

The independently run Loo of the Year Awards are organised by the British Toilet Association, which aims to encourage high standards in all types of "away from home" or public toilets.
