With knowledge gathered from working 30 years in the licensed trade and my forthcoming retirement after 27 years at the Cherry Tree, Rowledge, Surrey, I have decided to set up a
consultancy business to help new tenants get to grips with the challenges of running a pub in the 21st century.
A gap between the area manager and the new tenant can be filled by a "house doctor" who helps and advises them during those frightening and totally alien first few days, and offers to keep a watchful eye on them during the first year in case trouble arises.
As a tenant trainer with Greene King, I know of several tenants who would have benefited from this type of service and some who have left the trade because the service was not available.
I would provide book-keeping, banking and
accountancy advice and demonstrate the importance of keeping up with paperwork and red tape. I can help in practical ways regarding cellar bar and kitchen, menu suggestions, internet use and building relationships with local councils, police and
communities. And I would underline the importance of work-life balance.
I can provide accurate data about challenges, provide an early-warning system for area managers and pub companies and help promote greater respect and trust in the pub industry.
I know there is a need for my new role and see myself as being "Agony Auntie Von" to new tenants who have not yet acquired the experience I have gained and need
someone to trust. Some
tenants feel suspicious of their landlords and area managers who, although often very good at their job, can appear dogmatic and insensitive while dealing with the problems and pressures of running a pub, unless they have first-hand experience.
