Gastro pub newcomer Artizan Leisure has taken another step to achieving its ambition of creating a gastro-pub group.
It has bought a second pub, the Horseshoe in Mamhilad in Monmouthshire, to add to the fledgling group and hopes to develop a unique chain of two-AA rosette establishments.
Artizan managing director Phil Thomas, who previously managed four-star hotels and restaurants, has brought in two AA-rosette chef Kurt Fleming from the Bell at Skenfrith, Gwent, initially as head chef. He will then oversee the food offering of the Artizan group as it grows.
Thomas said it was a year-long project to bring the Horseshoe up to scratch, but refurbishment to restore original features was up and running.
Artizan's first pub, the Bush in St Hilary, Vale of Glamorgan, opened a year ago and is now achieving 20% year-on-year sales growth.
Although both pubs in the Artizan portfolio are in Wales, Thomas said he would not limit his search.
He added: "We are in no desperate hurry as it is important to get the right property in the right place at the right price, but we are hoping to open four or five pubs.
"They will all be in great country properties, with their own great food offering within an informal setting.
"It's an evolving market that's ripe for development. People spend all day in a collar and tie and they want to be able to enjoy great food on their own terms and without getting dressed up."
