What I love about pubs: Les Samuels
Les Samuels, travel agent, on what he loves about pubs.
Céad míle fáilte - as the saying goes. And that's exactly what you get at Hennessy's in Jewry Street, London: a hundred thousand welcomes.
Take the charm of a typical Irish pub, a landlord who talks as if he's swallowed the Blarney Stone (not just kissed it!) and a delightful colleen as bar manager. Add some fine wines and excellent beers, an extensive choice of delicious bar snacks and transport them all to the heart of the City of London. The result? My kind of pub!
There's no better way to escape the pressures of a busy day in the City than to relax for an hour or so in such a warm and friendly atmosphere with like-minded City workers.
When I need to entertain a client, Hennessy's is first choice again. The Captain's Table restaurant on the first floor offers a mouth-watering selection of meals cooked to perfection by its international chef. In the summer months I often opt for the barbecue, cooked al fresco in the roof garden.
In the evenings, there's no better place around to unwind: no caterwauling crooners at karaoke, no cranium-constricting questions at a quiz night and no deafening decibels from a disco - just a great atmosphere for a chat and a laugh with friends and colleagues. In my view, the best pub in the City, selling my favourite beer, the aptly named London Pride. What more could I ask?
