Three weeks in to the new Licensing Act a third of under-45 year-olds are still unaware that the laws have changed, according to a survey.
Despite the widespread media coverage, 33 per cent of 18-45 year-olds still have no idea the Licensing Act has come into force.
The survey, carried out by Bavaria beer, also revealed that one in three people (35 per cent) would only take advantage of longer opening on special occasions.
Respondents said it would have little impact on their regular nights out once the novelty has worn off.
Nearly half (42 per cent) thought there would be no or very little impact from the new laws after the Christmas and New Year parties finish.
Lou Hogg, licensee at the Old Crown, Hesket Newmarket, in Cumbria, agrees there are many people who are still confused about the new regime.
"There's still a lot of naivety among people," he said.
"Some are just not aware or others think I can stay open all night.
"I think pubs should display what their hours are so customers know where they stand."
Sarah Swainson, marketing manager at Bavaria , said: "The focus to date has been on customers being able to drink more now pubs and clubs are open later.
However what this survey shows is that drinking is not the be all and end all of a night out.
The survey also asked people if they would change their choice of drink now that pubs were open longer. Most, 48 per cent, didn't anticipate changing their tipple and one in five (18 per cent) claimed they would drink alternatives such as alcohol-free beers.
Ms Swaison added: "The licensing trade and drinks industry should be looking at ways to expand their offering to customers - it is clear there is a real opportunity and we need to take it."
