The 45-strong team at the Spring Inn in Rochdale are the latest to be nominated for The Publican's Proud of Your Staff award.

Manager at the JW Lees-owned house, Carol Holden, has put her staff up for the award for their hard work after she was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

"They were all amazing after I was recovering from my illness," said Carol. "Everybody filled in and worked extra shifts.

"They sent me upstairs if I was looking ill - it was like having lots of mothers, they were brilliant. When I came back I actually felt a bit unneeded."

Many of Carol's staff, who include eight full-timers, also brought her presents and flowers to cheer her up.

They also pull out all the stops when it comes to raising money for charity. In the nine years that Carol and fellow manager John have been at the pub, they have raised £77,000 - mainly for a local children's hospice. Carol added: "All the staff dress up in fancy dress for the events and help decorate the pub. Thanks to my staff we can definitely say this is the best pub around these parts."
