A Derby man has landed one of the top 10 best jobs in Britain, a magazine poll has revealed.

Forget being an astronaut or undercover secret agent, Peter Tulloch drinks beer for a living - and gets paid for it.

As an inspector for cask ale assessor Cask Marque, Peter, from Little Eaton, is responsible for monitoring the quality of pints pulled in pubs across the East Midlands.

Now his envied work has caught the eye of national lifestyle magazine Men's Health, which named beer taster as the eighth best possible job a man could have.

And he's in good company.

Beer taster was placed one below fighter pilot and one above porn star! Tulloch said: 'I have always known what a wonderful job being a Cask Marque inspector is. But it's nice to get the seal of approval from outside the organisation and indeed the licensed trade.

'Fun as it sounds to drink beer for a living there is a serious side to the inspector's role. Maintaining high quality standards in pubs means consumers get true value for money when they order a pint and hopefully greater appreciation of the product too.'

Tulloch has worked with Cask Marque since 1998. Like all inspectors, he has extensive experience in brewing and quality control - not to mention finely-tuned taste buds.

He said: 'During any visit we assess the cask beers on sale for their temperature, appearance, aroma and taste. Despite what people think we can judge the taste based on a few sips rather than a whole pint!

'Overall, this is a hugely- rewarding job. Publicans storing, caring for and serving cask- conditioned beer tend to be very proud of their offerings and those who get it right richly deserve recognition in the form of the Cask Marque.'

Cask Marque employs 40 beer inspectors. To date, it has accredited 3,787 licensees and tested something like 100,000 pints of ale. To find your nearest Cask Marque pub, visit www.caskmarque.co.uk
