Do you allow non-customers to use your car park?
Carol Holden
The Spring Inn Rochdale
Yes, we are a community pub and have a large car park so we do not mind as long as people ask first. There is a big housing estate around us and households with more than one car sometimes have problems and use our car park. We also allow the odd lorry driver to park up if there is nowhere else and sometimes ask them to donate to the local Hospice in lieu of a fee. Staff from the Hospice also regularly make use of our facilities.

We do not have a car park here but in pubs I have run in the past we have generally said yes when people ask. It's a gesture of goodwill and we always tried to co-operate as long as drivers came in to see us first. The only problem is if too many people park up and there are not sufficient spaces for genuine customers.

We share our car park with the next door garden centre so it's sometimes difficult to know who is a customer and who is not. On Sundays in good weather things can get difficult but that is a price you pay for sharing facilities. Some people have been known to park up their cars here for long periods because we have CCTV and they presume their vehicle will be safe, which is a bit cheeky!

There are three or four well-known country walks that pass near the pub so we are often busy with walkers parking up before setting off. We prefer people to ask, but we rarely, if ever, say no because you may have quite a lot to lose. You never know whether the walkers will call in for a drink or a snack when they have finished so you could be alienating potential customers.
