Trust Inns business development managers have written a series of 10 guide books for their tenants entitled 'Building Better Pub Businesses. The first edition focuses on tips for quality service including sections on conversing with customers, subtle selling and the importance of good manners.

Second flood for pub in two months

The Royal Oak in Haworth, Bradford, has been flooded for the second time within a year. The pub only re-opened two months ago following the floods of last August. About 2ft of water filled the cellar during a 20-minute flash storm last week. Licensees Tim and Clare Wild hope to re-open this weekend after missing out on an estimated £3,000 worth of trade.

Pubwatch unveils ID card scheme

South Shields Pubwatch has unveiled a Challenge-21 scheme in its pubs. Licensees will now ask all customers who appear to be under-21 to produce ID. The only forms of ID that will be accepted are a photo driving licence or a passport. The news comes as the area prepares for a summer blitz campaign by police including test purchasing.

Hosts to rescue village shops

The Pleasureboat Inn in Hickling, Norfolk, has offered to come to the aid of the village by housing its post office and newsagent at the pub. The village's last two shops are due to close at the end of August. Licensees Darren and Julie Mayhew have earmarked one of the pub's outbuildings as a perfect home for the post office. Darren Mayhew said he simply wanted to support the village where he was born 44 years ago.

Builder knocks down listed pub

A building contractor has been ordered to pay £16,500 after workers knocked down a Grade II-listed Cheshire pub without permission to do so. DDS Ltd pleaded guilty to two charges relating to the unauthorised demolition of the Bay Horse pub located just outside Warrington town centre. The company said the mistake had occurred because of a breakdown in communications due to recent staff changes.

September start date for Adams

Suffolk brewer Greene King has announced that Justin Adams will take over as managing director of the brewing company division from 5 September.
