Man jailed for glass attack on TV star
A man has been jailed for three years for glassingLondon's Burning actor Jim Alexander in the face at a Surrey pub.
Scott Haynes, 23, admitted wounding with intent and was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court last week.
The court heard that Haynes, of Red Lane, Hurst Green, approached Alexander while he was drinking with friends at the Star Inn in Lingfield on 9 February last year. Haynes, who appeared drunk, tried to talk to the actor and one of Alexander's friend's made a comment that Haynes appeared offended by. Haynes swung a pint glass into Alexander's face. The glass did not break but it caused a deep cut to the left of his lower lip. Haynes also punched Alexander and they fell to the floor. Haynes was escorted out.
The court heard that Haynes had a previous conviction for common assault and had two cautions against him.
Jolyon Perkins, defending, said Haynes apologised to Alexander. He said Haynes was in a "considerable amount of distress" for his terminally ill father.
Perkins said: "There is no evidence to suggest the broken glass cracked and caused the injury. It was merely a tool by which the injury was caused. It may have been the victim's tooth that came through his lip rather than the glass breaking into the face."
Jailing Haynes, Judge John Crocker said the 23-year-old "pleaded guilty to one of the most serious offences in the criminal calendar".
