The entire 260-strong sales force of wholesalers Waverley TBS signed up as Campaign For Real Ale members at the company's annual sales conference. Morning Advertiser beer writer Roger Protz urged the sales force to continue the team's good work, which has earned them the accolade of Britain's number one cask-ale provider. Waverley trade marketing director Martin Breading said: "Joining Camra en masse demonstrates our absolute passion for ale."
BII launches expanded NITA awards
The BII (British Institute of Innkeeping) has launched the 2005 National Industry Training Awards (NITAs) to recognise and reward the best training and trainers in the £23bn licensed retail sector. There are two new categories the door supervisor training award and the social responsibility award for off-licences. The awards are open to pub companies, individual licensees and training organisations that have achieved success through training or development. Yates among seven to join ALMR
High-street operator Yates Group is one of seven new members of the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR). Hertfordshire-based McMullen's has also joined, along with airport bar operator Alpha Retail Catering. ALMR chairman Alex Salussolia said the companies would be "hugely important additions to the influence of the ALMR". Alliance wine, Heineken UK, solicitors Lunn Groves and London property agents Davis Coffer Lyons have all joined as industry associate members.
Sussex police chief backs pubs tax'
Sussex's top cop has reiterated threats to force pubs and clubs to pay for policing in a bid to reduce drink-related crime. Chief Constable Ken Jones said licensed premises should contribute to the costs of policing the night-time economy, in a report to the Sussex Police Authority. He claimed that some venues profited from a thriving nightlife and then dumped their problems on the street for police to mop up. Angry licensees said they already contributed enough in the form of taxes and business rates.
IFBB set for change at the helm?
Anthony Fuller has hinted he may stand down as chairman of the Independent Family Brewers of Britain (IFBB) with Hardys & Hansons MD Tim Bonham being touted as a possible replacement. The Fuller's supremo has been chairman since the organisation was formed in 1993. IFBB spokeswoman Tina Snowball said: "Anthony has made suggestions he may stand down but nothing will be considered until the next council meeting on 12 October."
