Lambeth College in south London is offering a free Security Industry Authority(SIA)-approved course for female door supervisors.SIA chairman Peter Hermitage said women were playing an "ever important role" in security, and make up 11% of doorstaff in England and Wales.
Mum took babyon pub crawl
A mother who took her baby on a pub crawl has been given an 18-month community rehabilitation order. The woman, who cannot be named, tookthe three-month-old on a nine-hour stint covering four pubs in Yeovil. She was also ordered to pay £30 costsat Yeovil Magistrates Court on Monday.
Stratford boosts Australian range
New World wine specialist Stratford's Wine Agencies has added two newagencies to its Australian portfolio: Ferngrove Vineyards Estate from Western Australia and Gapsted Wines from Victoria. Both ranges will be launched on the Stratford's stand at the London International Wine & Spirits Fair later this month.
JW Lees marksVE Day with brew
Manchester brewer JW Lees marked the 60th anniversary of VE Day by rebrewing its 1945 beer to the exact recipe. Proceeds from the ale, which has not been brewed since the end ofthe war, are to be donatedto the Royal British Legion and the Lord Mayor's charities.
Ralph Owen's 3B's named top cider
The Campaign for Real Ale has named Ralph Owen's 3B's cider as the best in Britain at the National Champion Cider and Perry Awards. The Welsh cider was lauded by judges for having "tremendous character" and "an aroma which fills the mouth before it's even tasted". Ralph Owen is also the current holder of the Welsh Cider Championships Gold Award.
Single malt helps prevent cancer'
Drinking single malt whisky may help to prevent cancer, according to a biochemistry conference. Dr Jim Swan claimed that single malt contains greater levels of antioxidants than red wine and so could help prevent cancer. However, Cancer Research UK said therewas not yet enough supporting data.
