Kalashnikov's Russian vodka is set to be sold in the UK under a new name, following negotiations with The Portman Group.
According to John Florey, managing director of The Kalashnikov Joint Stock Vodka Company, both parties have agreed to change the name from Kalashnikov's Russian Vodka to General Kalashnikov's Russian Vodka.
In February the drinks watchdog's Independent Complaints Panel upheld a complaint made against the product, which suggested it was in breach of the Portman Group Code of Practice because it suggested an association with violent behaviour.
As a result the Portman Group issued a Retailer Alert Bulletin, warning licensees not to stock the product.
This led to protests from licensees, many of whom vented their feelings on thepublican.com.
Mr Florey said he was delighted with the progress made. "We are delighted to have come to this compromise. The Portman Group is a respected trade group and we are happy to make the change to the name."
However, there is still work to be done, with the new artwork for the bottle yet to be finalised.
The Portman Group said it would not comment until the new packaging is agreed.
