Nader and Shaheen Khan are complete newcomers and view the pub trade as a fresh challenge.

They have both proven themselves in business Nader works in financial services, while Shaheen runs her own florists and the couple feel it's time they had a stab at something a bit different.

"I've been in my business for quite some time and it's been going reasonably well. I just decided that I wanted to look at another business opportunity," explains Nader. "I noticed there was a boarded-up pub near my business and I contacted Fleurets."

As for the type of pub that the couple are looking for, Nader says they are willing to be flexible.

Nader says he would like to develop the catering side in particular, an area in which they both have some experience; Nader was a partner in a restaurant, while Shaheen often caters for large family functions.

But he adds: "It depends what sort of business it is already. If the pub we get will do better with an improved food option then we'll do that; if not, we may leave it alone."

On the financial side, the couple, who are both in their early 40s, say they have earned enough from their respective businesses for cash not to be too much of a restriction. They are looking for a pub that has a minimum capital requirement of between £40,000 and £60,000. "I've not seen anything that is out of our reach," says Nader.

They are looking for somewhere in west London, and insist that the public area shouldn't be less than 1,500sq ft.

Whatever type of pub they get, Nader isn't planning to sit back and let the business carry on as it was before. They may be novices, but they don't lack ambition.

"If we take over a premises, we would look to do a complete re-fit. We would like to start again. I will look at other pubs to see what I like and steal other people's ideas. I don't know anything about the game, to be honest. I just know what I like and what I don't."
