The home village of Ellen MacArthur, world record holder for sailing around the globe non-stop, is set to celebrate her achievements by creating a carving of her on the wall of the local pub. Dennis Horsley, licensee of the Derwent Hotel in Whatstandwell, Derbyshire, will leave space on the wall to add any future achievements.
Imperial under fire in Liverpool
Liverpool's smoke-free campaigners have accused Imperial Tobacco of using scare tactics on the city's licensees. The campaigners claim Imperial Tobacco has been persuading pubs through a newsletter not to back the city's bid to ban smoking in public places. However, the company said the newsletter is simply a factual guide on the prospect of a smoking ban and has been distributed to licensees nationwide.
Enville rolls out Womanizer beer
West Midlands brewer Enville Ales celebrated St Valentine's Day by launching a romantic beer called Womanizer. Enville believes it is the only British ale to be produced using damsons and sloe gin. The brewery has produced 49-gallon barrels of the beer.
Punch bag blamed for bad behaviour
Cumbria police have blamed a punch bag machine for fuelling aggressive behaviour in and around a Penrith pub. Rusty Lomas, licensee of the Waverley Hotel, has since replaced it with a football machine. But councillors have renewed the pub's PEL for three months on condition that the football machine is removed.
Jones marks 50 years in trade
Elizabeth Jones, licensee at the Chester Inn in Holyhead, Gwynedd, is celebrating 50 years in the trade. Commenting on some of the many changes she has seen, Jones said: "Prices have been the biggest change and the increase in bad behaviour, but we have been lucky here and there has never been any trouble."
Wine daily keeps hearts healthy'
A glass of wine everyday keeps women's hearts healthy, according to new research from Swedish scientists. They found that women who had suffered a heart attack or blocked arteries had a healthier heart beat if they drank a small amount of wine every day.
