56% of pubs may ditch food'
Food could be off the menu at more than half of Britain's bars and pubs by 2008, according to new research. More than 56% of pubs will ditch food over smoking claims a report by leisure consultant RSM Robson Rhodes. The survey of 5,400 pubs and bars revealed that 71% fear a smoking ban will mean a loss of customers. British Beer & Pub Association spokesman Mark Hastings said: "Pubs are facing an unwelcome Hobson's choice. Our estimate is that 80% serve food, but in one-third of premises it's a nice to have, not a must have. People fear what happened in Ireland and taking [the food offer] out is an obvious option."
