Three-quarters of people in the leisure industry believe more skilled workers are needed if the UK is to host the Olympics in 2012.
A survey conducted by the industry's Sector Skills Council People 1st found that 73 per cent of people in the leisure industry believe the Olympics would boost tourism and 53 per cent see it as a direct opportunity fto boost their own businesses.
To ensure the games are a success, 73 per cent of respondents want the Government to ensure employers know what training courses and qualifications are available and more than 70 per cent say they want the training and qualifications system to be easier to understand. Brian Wisdom, chief executive officer of People 1st, said: "People are aware of the opportunity and the challenge ahead which is great news.
"With seven years between now and 2012, the UK certainly has the capability but we really need to look at the skills issue now if we are to succeed.
"What employers need is the right people, with the right skills at the right time. There's a responsibility on business to invest in training, but equally we need to ensure qualifications and training are matched to employers' needs."
The survey was conducted among employers, trade associations, colleges and government organisations in the leisure, hospitality, travel and tourism industries. Those surveyed represented restaurants, hotels, contract catering, pubs, bars and nightclubs, travel services, tourism services, self-catering accommodation, membership clubs, youth hostels, events and other segments of the industry.
