One-fifth of pub-goers say that good food is the most important factor when choosing a pub.

This was one of the findings of a survey conducted by the AA prior to the publication of the first edition of its new guide Britain's Best, Country pubs for food lovers.

This latest AA publication which is being published as a companion guide to the AA Pub Guide 2005 lists pubs that appeal to people who love their food and are prepared to go a few extra miles for it.

The survey revealed that an overwhelming 71% would be prepared to drive for at least 30 minutes to find a pub that did good food, and more than half (58%) of those surveyed make it a weekend treat.

Every establishment listed in the book has been chosen for its commitment to serving good food based on fresh, and, where possible, local produce cooked to order.

Pub owners have to pay to be featured in the guide. But pubs are only invited to be featured if they are included in the AA's main guide.

The guide contains lively descriptions of food, drink and ambience that's being offered by traditional inns set in stunning locations, welcoming pubs that offer the warmth and character of rural Britain, outstanding gastro pubs that feature imaginative cuisine and wine lists, and pubs that proudly serve Britain's finest ales.

Kate Trew, editor of the AA's Britain's Best series said: "Unlike other pub guides, Country pubs for food lovers has everything you need to make a whole day out, which can be organised around a chosen pub.

"We recommend local attractions or places to visit for each entry, and walks which start and end at a pub so food-lovers can work up an appetite, or work off a great meal. Many of the pubs included have rooms, making them ideal weekend destinations."

Britain's Best, Country pubs for food lovers is available at £11.99.
