The Trafalgar Tavern, Greenwich, London.

STYLE: A maritime-inspired Victorian treasure that offers stunning views of the city of London from the banks of the River Thames.

DECOR: The pub is decked out in seafaring attire as portraits of British naval admirals adorn the bar's dark green walls. An abundance of old wine bottles filled with candles sit atop fireplaces in a room of high ceilings and large river-facing windows.

WHAT'S ON OFFER: Greenwich was once famed for its whitebait suppers and the Trafalgar Tavern offers the dish. The young herring are battered, deep-fried and served whole with paprika mayonnaise (£6). The pub opts for a fish-themed menu with other starters including seared five-spiced tuna loin served with a salad of vine cherry tomato, anchovy and red onion (£6). Aquatic mains vary from hearty cod, haddock or plaice with mushy peas and chips to whole grilled Dover sole on the bone served with new potatoes and cherry tomato salad (£10.50). Landlubbers can enjoy lamb and mint, steak and Guinness, or pork and apple sausages with mash and brown onion gravy (£8.90).

CHEERS: Cask ales at the bar include Fuller's London Pride, Flowers and Old Bob. A global mix of beers including Staropraamen and Hoegaarden is also available on draught. The Trafalgar has a short wine list.

JUST DESSERTS: A small but appealing sweets selection ranges from the weightwatching fruit salad with mango sorbet (£4.50) to the belt-busting chocolate tart with chocolate ice cream (£4.50).

AND ANOTHER THING:Liberal party MPs would attend whitebait suppers at the Trafalgar Tavern in the mid 19th century to mark the end of each session of Parliament.
