A pub manager and his deputy have been commended by a judge for their bravery in trying to stop a drunken customer from driving. Christopher Dye, manager of the White Horse, Birstall, Leicestershire, and his assistant manager, Michael Garland, were publicly praised by recorder Christopher Goodchild, sitting at Leicester Crown Court. The men were trying to stop Teresa Ryan from getting behind the wheel of a car after she had drunk eight pints of lager. Dye suffered an injured hand and Garland ended up being carried on the bonnet of Ryan's car and had his leg run over. The incident happened in January after Ryan had been drinking for six hours. As she left the pub, the landlord demanded her car keys.Ryan screamed and swore at himbefore driving her car into the wall of the pub. Dye was injured as the door slammed and Garland was carried on the bonnet for four metres. Ryan was caught by police and was found to be nearly three times over the limit. She was given a two-year community rehabilitation order, with a three-year driving ban, after pleading guilty to dangerous driving, drink driving, failing to stop after an accident and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.
