The British passion for takeaways and spicy food is the inspiration for a new range of Walkers crisps. The limited edition Great British Takeaways selection, available from July 14 until the end of the year, features Chinese Spare Ribs, Sweet and Sour and Chicken Tikka Masala flavours. Walkers Snacks carried out research which showed the UK ethnic food business was worth more than £950m, with Chinese and Indian the most popular takeaways. Chicken Tikka Masala, recently described as "Britain's true national dish" by MP Robin Cook, is the most popular meal in the UK. Gary Lineker will front a Bollywood-style television commercial for the new range, which has a £2.5m advertising budget. The TV ad shows him riding on a white horse to an Indian wedding, only to find his bride is Meera Syal "Granny" on the BBC comedy Goodness Gracious Me. Walkers' trade marketing manager, Nicky Seal, said: "Flavour is a key reason for people choosing our brand. We have developed three new flavours based on the nation's favourite takeaway foods.
