Talks to decide the future of the Wrexham Lager brand have ended in a truce.

The talks, which were held at the House of Commons last month, were arranged in an attempt to end an argument over the brand's future between its owners Carlsberg-Tetley (C-T) and a local business consortium, the Wrexham Lager Phoenix Group.

Last year an Early Day Motion tabled by MP Martyn Jones, accused C-T of "stringing out" its negotiations with the consortium and blocking its attempts to save the brand from extinction.

After last month's talks between C-T and the consortium, Mr Jones said: "I am satisfied with the outcome as it means the door is not yet closed on the future of Wrexham Lager.

"A full and frank discussion took place. Both sides had the opportunity to put their case and Carlsberg was left in no doubt as to the level of anger felt in the Wrexham area over its disregard for the town's brewing heritage.

"As a result of the meeting, dialogue has begun on Wrexham Lager's future and the temporary truce will allow further discussion. Hopefully this breathing space will give C-T time to reconsider its position on selling the brand to the Wrexham Lager Phoenix Group.

"If C-T is now ready to negotiate realistically on the issues that we discussed I am hopeful that in the next few weeks Wrexham Lager may have a better future than it currently enjoys."
