A Yorkshire licensee who is determined to prove that cask ale is alive and well, has organised a celebration of local beer.

Geoff Amos, licensee of the Three Pigeons in Halifax, launches the Celebration of Yorkshire Ale today (February 1).

More than 150 pubs in West Yorkshire were invited to take part in the festival, which was thought up by Mr Amos as a reaction to the claims that sales of cask ales are falling.

"Sales are certainly not falling in my pub or in many others that I know," he said. "The big brewers stopped brewing traditional ales and now claim there is no demand for them. Let's show them the real truth - the facts."

Mr Amos circulated a brochure listing the 16 participating breweries and the beers on sale, together with a contact name. The brochure has been sent out to all pubs in West Yorkshire so they can choose which beers they sell.

Brewers taking part include the Barge and Barrel Brewery in Elland, Goose Eye Brewery in Keighley, Salamander Brewery in Bradford and Timothy Taylor in Keighley.
