Pub chain Slug and Lettuce is offering its customers the chance to appreciate fine art as they sip their pints.
A new initiative called Bar Culture has seen the York Slug play host to an exhibition of artwork by students at York St John college.
Fifty original works were displayed at the bar during January. The most popular 10 were chosen by a panel of judges from the art and media world as well as representatives from the Slug and Lettuce team and these will go to a public vote on January 31 to find the most popular.
Introduced to find the North's most successful piece of student fine art, the Bar Culture project gives students from the college the opportunity to experience exhibiting as a fine artist - a key part to their fine art degree programme - as well as bringing fine art into public spaces not usually associated with art.
Richard Cork, a twentieth century art writer and head of the judging panel, said: "I am delighted to support this adventurous idea, which gives students a great opportunity to expose their liveliest work to the widest possible audience."
