Average pint price soars by 13p since January

The current average cost of a pint of draught lager has now tipped over the £4 mark – up almost 3.3% since January, official figures have found.

According to data from the Office of National Statistics from June 2022, the average price in January was £3.96 and has risen by 13p.

This is the sharpest rise in recent years as the next largest was in 2003 between January and June, where the price increased by 17p from £2.11 to £2.28.

Previous data

Since then, 2008 was the next six-month period that saw a large rise where prices rose from £2.65 to £2.76.

In the past decade, January to June 2013 saw an increase of 8p from £3.22 to £3.30 and in 2017, it went from £3.52 to £3.59.

Last month (June), research from CGA found a pint in London cost more than £8 – making the capital the most expensive place for beer.

Price analysis

However, at the other end of the spectrum, the north west was the cheapest, specifically Lancashire, where the average cost for a pint was £1.79 – a difference from London prices of £6.27.

The data was similar to that revealed by the ONS in March this year, which found the average cost of a pint in the UK rose by 23p​ in the past two years – the third biggest increase since records began in 1987.

In January 2020 the cost of a pint was £3.73 and as of January 2022, it had risen by 6.2% to £3.96.
