Carlsberg mulls Tuborg roll-out
Carlsberg is in discussions with pub companies about the launch of Tuborg in the UK.
The lager is Denmark's best-selling beer and also boasts wide distribution throughout mainland Europe.
The beer was firsted brewed in 1880, and Carlsberg merged with Tuborg in 1969.
The Danish version of the beer is 4.2% abv although there are several variants available in its home country.
A Carlsberg spokesperson said: "Carlsberg UK is continually looking for opportunities within our international portfolio. Tuborg is one of the largest global beer brands, with current growth of over 10% year on year.
"We do talk to buyers when we are considering new product launches. But we have nothing to announce at this time."
If Carlsberg presses ahead with the launch, the beer would go head to head with InBev's Beck's Vier and Heineken-owned Amstel in the newly created premium-standard lager market, where beers are around 4% abv.
However, one senior pub company executive voiced doubts that a UK roll-out would succeed. He said: "The draught beer market is full of innovation - more so than any other product category - but I'm not sure that Tuborg has a place. It would need to have a real point of difference to make it."
