This week's bar talk looks at how the Brexit result of the EU referendum has affected trade six months on.

Cheryl Hickman from the Bull Inn, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk said Brexit hadn't affected the pub.

She added: "Each month it is up compared to the same month last year. There has been no effect here as yet. In January, the amount of money people have been spending is unbelievable."

David Salisbury from the Alford Arms in Salisbury, Wiltshire agreed with Hickman but had other concerns about trade this year.

He said: "So far, we haven’t seen any effect but it is hard to tell. However, going forward, with inflation increasing I think that might have an effect on people. It is hard to tell with Brexit but my biggest worry is inflation.

Michelle Abbott from the Anchor in Wingham, Kent said the pub was split when it came to whether the UK should remain or leave the European Union.

She added: "There’s a lot of chat about Brexit and the bar was divided at the time, but, at the moment we haven’t seen an effect, other than a bit of banter. With winter and Christmas, there’s been the usual ups and downs but nothing unusual."

The Cutter Inn, Ely in Cambridgeshire licensee Steve Haslam saw some effect immediately after the 'Leave' result was announced.

He added: "There was pessimism to start with and there are some signs it has bled through into the first few months. Brexit will put pressure on trade with a negative impact due to pricing and consumer spending."
