Skegness pub goes viral after creating a Guinness/Smirnoff Ice hybrid
The Marine Boathouse created the new drink, which is half alcopop and half Guinness, in honour of young farmers' weekend. Christened the 'Badger', a Facebook post from the pub advertising the concoction has been shared more than 2,000 times and been commented on over 1,000 times.
Owner Dean Gillison told the Publican’s Morning Advertiser the drink had been created by his daughter and that the pub had been taken aback by the response.
"We created the drink for young farmers' weekend, which is our busiest weekend - they've been coming to us for 15 years and each time it gets better and better. I've been shocked by how many likes and shares it's had and the number of phone calls the pub has received from people in Ireland. We had a meeting with [Guinness and Smirnoff owners] Diaego this morning, who wanted to say thank you for using their products. We've even had animal rights activists calling up asking us to change the name."
Gillson's daughter and pub manager Sam Bartlett added: "I wanted to create something a bit gimmicky, and obviously it's black and white and called the Badger, so there's a connection to farmers. It's quite tricky to make-you have to beat the Smirnoff Ice with a straw so it's flat and then pour the Guinness in over the back of a spoon.
"It's been well worth it - I've had people as far away as Manchester messaging me and asking how it's done. We're always trying new things and we might make this an annual thing."
The new drink has received a mixed response online. Although many commented saying they were eager to try it, one drinker described it as a "dreadful waste of good Guinness".
